Hi ... I'm Kay!
Understanding the pulmonary artery catheter (PAC) and how to accurately determine pressures is essential to providing quality care to critically ill patients. Join me in this discussion of the PAC .... from basic structure of the catheter to determination of accurate pressures and abnormal waveform analysis.
If you are not familiar with my work, I have included a short bio below...
Kay Hoppe MSN, RN, CNS, CCRN, PCCN has been a Critical Care Nurse, CNS, and Educational Consultant for 40 years. She has presented extensively throughout the US and is well known for her CCRN Review Course. Nurses consistently comment that Kay makes complicated concepts easy to understand. Her CCRN Podcast has over a half million downloads.
Kay received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. As a staff nurse and CNS, she worked in various ICU, CCU, Burn, and Trauma settings. She has been a national speaker in critical care for over thirty years. Kay has been teaching in the university setting for the past four years.
When she is not teaching, Kay loves to spend time with her daughters, Jenna and Olivia as well as her dogs Milo and Roxy. She also loves spending time outside in her flower gardens.
Upon Completion of this Course You Will be Able to:
Describe the indications and diagnostic benefits of the pulmonary artery catheter (PAC)
Identify catheter features & markings of the PAC
List possible insertion sites
Identify waveform characteristics and pressures of: Right atrium, right ventricle, & pulmonary artery during catheter insertion and ongoing monitoring
Correlate waveform components with the ECG waveform to ensure accurate measurements
Describe the significance of abnormal A and V waves in the right atrial presure or wedge pressure waveforms
Correlate waveforms and pressures with underlying pathophysiology
